In making images that are the shadow, the space, and the absence these are grappling with the lost physical body, but also take into account how images can taunt because they are present when the body is not. They are also trying to materialise and understand Freud’s (2005:249) notion of “the shadow of the object falling upon the ego”, giving an agency to the shadow as if it were “the forsaken object”.
